Couples Therapy

Intimacy & Sexual Wellness Therapy

Intimacy of course, is a fundamental aspect of relationships, but it’s not uncommon for couples to encounter obstacles that hinder their connection – both emotionally and physically. You might have noticed that the spark you felt in the early stages of your relationship has dimmed. Physical affection may have become infrequent, and emotional intimacy might feel surface level. These challenges can lead to feelings of frustration, isolation, and confusion. You may wonder how to reconnect and cultivate a deeper bond with your partner.

The good news is that therapy can provide the tools and support needed to enhance intimacy and sexual well-being in your relationship. It offers a safe space to explore your feelings, communicate openly, and foster a renewed sense of closeness. Various factors can contribute to a decline in intimacy, including stress, communication issues, past experiences, or changes in your relationship dynamic. Life’s pressures can take a toll, leading to emotional withdrawal or misunderstandings that create distance between partners.

When intimacy fades, it can create a cycle of frustration and resentment. You may feel like you’re drifting apart, and the physical connection that once felt natural may now seem fraught with pressure or anxiety. Recognizing these barriers is the first step toward overcoming them.

The Four Attachment Styles

Couples therapy provides a supportive environment to explore the complexities of intimacy and sexuality. It offers an opportunity to understand your individual needs and desires, fostering empathy and connection while addressing underlying issues and enhancing communication skills. Therapy can help you identify and challenge negative patterns affecting your intimacy. By learning to communicate openly about your feelings and desires, you can deepen your understanding of each other’s emotional and physical needs. Therapy equips you with the tools to reignite the passion and closeness that brought you together in the first place.

Intimacy & Sexual Wellness Therapy FAQ

How long will therapy last?

The frequency of your appointments will be discussed and determined during your initial therapy sessions, based on your unique needs. Typically, after six to eight sessions, you and your therapist will review your progress. Treatment goals will be assessed periodically and adjusted as necessary. It's important to remember that you have full control over the therapy process. You are always free to discontinue treatment at any time, regardless of your therapist's perspective. However, we encourage you to have a conversation with your therapist before making the decision to end therapy. Keep in mind, each therapy experience is individual, and outcomes can vary from person to person.

What will happen in the first session?

The first session, or "consultation," is all about getting to know you and understanding what you're going through. We’ll take the time to talk about your personal challenges and your situation, so we can create a treatment plan that feels right for you. You’ll be asked some questions, and we’ll explore different aspects of your concerns together. Sometimes, this may include psychological assessments or reaching out to others, like your doctor or family (but only with your permission). Once we have a clear picture, your therapist will share some treatment options with you, and together, you’ll decide on a plan that feels comfortable and helpful for you.

Are Psychological Services Covered by OHIP?

Psychotherapy services are not covered by OHIP. However, many extended health insurance plans provide partial coverage for psychotherapy services. The coverage details, including reimbursement rates, may vary depending on your insurer and plan. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm your coverage details and claim process. Payment for services is due at the end of each session. A detailed receipt will be provided, which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement or use for tax purposes.
